Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) Aging Profiles

Most full scale BAC Plant Operators use Research Laboratory Services for their BAC Aging Profiles, including Seqwater, MidCoast Water, Rous Water, Fraser Coast, Veolia Water, ATJV (Acciona), Orange City Council, and Auckland Watercare.

To predict the bed life of Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) filters, samples of the carbon are taken annually and monitored for fouling. By plotting this data over time, the life expectancy of the carbon under the specific operating conditions can be assessed. This is particularly useful for asset managers to budget for carbon replacement, or for operators that are experiencing problems with their existing BAC filters.

Biodegradable Dissolved Organic Carbon (BDOC) and Assimilable Organic Carbon (AOC) Testing

In addition to media analysis plants with BAC filters typically use BDOC or AOC to assess the effectiveness of their BACs in reducing the biodegradable component of the water. This is important to reduce biofilm growth within the distribution system.

These parameters are also used in water recycling projects to determine the risk of biofouling in distribution systems. Research Laboratory Services has provided BDOC analysis services and data interpretation to the largest re-use pilot plant projects in Australia – Eastern Treatment Plant for Melbourne Water and Beenyup Aquifer Recharge Project for WA Water Corporation.

Water Treatment Plant Optimisation Studies

We have a range of industrial and municipal clients that have used our consulting services including Asahi, Western Environmental, Orica, Sydney Water, Taswater and Melbourne Water.

Activated Carbon and IEX Application Studies

In addition to Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) dose rate and contact time calculations for taste and odour reduction, for municipal water authorities such as GV Water, Griffith City Council, Federation Council and Westernport Water; we also conduct activated carbon application studies for a range of industrial customers including Veolia, Minetek, Midway Timber, Manildra Group and Worth Recycling. Contact us to best see how activated carbon and IEX can be best used in your process.

Operator Training

Research Laboratory Services has been providing carbon advice to the water industry for almost 20 years. We have created a training programme for both Biological Activated Carbon (BAC) and Powdered Activated Carbon (PAC) for the drinking water industry. This training programme is tailor made to your requirements with relevant case studies and data from your plant explained personally. This training course has been well received by our clients, Veolia Water, Seqwater, Acciona and in conjunction with The Water Industry Training Centre.

Ozonation Application Studies

With a lab scale ozone generator and sophisticated testing equipment for low range ozone residual detection we can provide ozone demand studies, batch tests and optimisation studies to our clients. Our recent projects include South East Water’s ozonation of trade waste, and Veolia Water’s reduction of bromate formation project.

H2S Breakthrough Capacity

By periodically analysing in-use carbon from sewerage pump stations for H2S Breakthrough Capacity the time for carbon replacement can be predicted. Currently WA Water Corporation, Cleanteq, and Activated Carbon Technologies conduct regular H2S studies.

Activated Carbon Bed Life Determination

Many industrial clients such as Australian Prawn Farms, Advanced Filtration Group, Independent Filter Services use our activated carbon testing services to determine remaining bed life of their activated carbon systems.

Filter Media Assessments

Many water utilities including Melbourne Water, Veolia, Trility, Lendlease (Coliban Water), Fraser Coast Council use our laboratory services to determine the condition of their filtration media. We can also test pre-shipment or delivered filter media to ensure it meets specification prior to installation.
